NATALIE

I couldn't believe how much I missed Adam as soon as he had waved goodbye and pulled out of Brianna's driveway. Even though I knew I would probably see him tomorrow, the thought of being away from him made me feel a bit off-kilter.

Brianna surprised me with a big macaroni and cheese dinner. We had a huge chat about how things were going with Adam, and she was clearly delighted for me.

Caleb's trip had been extended for another day, so he was very glad I was staying longer. But I had to call Mom so that she wouldn't worry. I wished I could just send a text, but my parents thought texts were too informal and preferred phoning.

I went up to the guest room to make the call since Brianna had managed to extricate herself from most of the family drama, and I wanted to keep it that way. I just hoped I could avoid Dad. He'd been in a horrible, chaotic mood lately as he prepared to run for some position with the city.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Mom. It's me."

"Natalie, dear, are you coming home tonight?"

"I'm still at Brianna's. My car died on the way here, and it's going to take them several days to fix it. I haven't gotten a firm time yet."

Mom made that weird clicking noise with her tongue that told me she was thinking. "Your father will not be pleased about this."

"Things happen, Mom. I didn't plan to break down on a highway in Mackton, it just happened. And I can't leave it in the shop indefinitely."

"Just take the train back, then. Or get a rental car," Mom suggested.

"No. I'm staying here until the car is fixed, or until they tell me it's unfixable, and they don't work over the weekend."

"What about your father's event on Tuesday night? He wanted the entire family to make an appearance."

It was maddening that he thought "the entire family" no longer included Brianna. Dad's need to show off his daughters to prove that he was a quality person had always unnerved me.

"It's not even a family event, Mom. It's a community auction with a bunch of city officials. Nobody else is going to have their daughters there."

"Still, you know how he gets. It would be much easier if you were here."

Easier for her, since he would have two people to berate, not just her.

"You know that you don't have to go either, right?" I asked. "You're under no legal obligation to go to every single one of his functions."

There was a pause. I was sure that thought had never once occurred to her. I honestly didn't know whether my mother was weak, or my father had brainwashed her, or what sort of bizarre dynamic they had going on. I just knew that it was unhealthy, and I was sick of it.

"Anyway," I continued, "I obviously can't make it. I am safely with Brianna, and doing some job hunting here."

There was a sharp intake of breath as if looking for employment in Oakton was a complete and utter surprise, even though I had told her at least three times.
